Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has hinted at a potential offers for Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria, who continues to be linked with a move away from the Spanish club. The Argentine was one of the best players for Madrid last season, as they won the Champions League and the Copa del Rey. It was a historic campaign for the club because it was the 10th European trophy. However, it is highly expected that di Maria may be sold in order to raise money. Madrid recently brought in Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez for close to £90 million.
It would have a severe dent on the club’s ability to meet the financial fair play regulations set by UEFA if they do not sell a couple of players to neutralise this figure. As one of the valuable players in the team, Madrid are reportedly prepared to sell di Maria. French giants Paris St Germain are also thought to be interested in the player, but were recently ruled themselves out of contention citing the transfer fees demanded by Madrid. The Spanish club valuable player in excess of £ 50 million, but because PSG recently brought in Chelsea defender David Luiz for a similar figure, they are unable to sign him.
Van Gaal says that United will be interested in a player like di Maria, as they continue rebuilding the team after a disappointing season.
“It is a strategy of Manchester United to do that. At this moment, we have five No.9s and four No.10s – and we don’t have wingers to give us attacking width. Or, I should say, we don’t have wingers of the highest level, like Ronaldo or Di Maria or somebody like that. So, I have to play in another way – and you have seen that already. I only buy when I think we need to buy – in the position that is necessary,” said Van Gaal.
